Charlotte Cupcakes: Kai's Kookies and More

Making a trip along South Boulevard this week, I noticed a large cupcake sign sitting on the side of the road.

I figured I’d better stop and check it out.

Sure enough, there’s a small dessert shop called Kai’s Kookies and More. There are some small tables with two chairs each inside.

While there are cookies and brownies and bars and other goodies, cupcakes certainly seem to be a staple of the shop. There’s an entire list of flavors. Not all the flavors are available every day though. I immediately noticed a strawberry cupcake that Strawberry Shortcake herself would have probably had in her house. They were supposed to have a Marble Cupcake and an Oreo Cookie Cupcake that day, but they were already out, so I settled for a Red Velvet instead.

Strawberry Cupcake

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that the strawberry cupcake I had from Gigi's, while good, wasn’t bursting with flavor. Well this week, I got my wish: a cupcake bursting with strawberry flavor in every bite.

It had so much flavor that when I packed too much cupcake and frosting onto my fork and then ate it, I choked a little bit. It was almost like opening a bottle of Hershey’s Strawberry syrup and doing a shot of it.

They probably did go a wee bit overboard with the strawberry. It was still very delicious though!

Red Velvet

To be frank, the red velvet cupcake didn’t taste amazing. The cream cheese frosting was deliciously creamy. It was light, but not very fluffy. That was probably the best part about the entire cupcake. There was an almond on top, but I removed that. The cake portion was all right, but not remarkable. It really didn’t have that much taste at all.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, since the frosting was amazing, but if I wanted strictly frosting I would have bought a can of it from the grocery store and dipped some animal crackers in it.

Still, a cupcake without any obtrusive flavors is better than a bad tasting cupcake I guess.

The positives: the Strawberry Cupcake was truly flavorful, if not to the point of extreme. The cream cheese frosting was great as well!

The negatives: the lack of taste in the Red Velvet cupcake was the only drawback.

Cost: $2.77 isn't too steep, but not as cheap as some of the other $2.50 cupcakes available in Charlotte.

Celebrity (look-a-like) sightings - part 3

Part 1 and Part 2 were good, but I think there's some definite look-a-likes this time around. I'll get right to the comparisons, but let me know what you think? Am I spot on or what? I saved the very best (and closest comparison) for last this time, so make sure to scroll to the bottom of the page. On the left: Edge On the right: Jamie Campbell Bower May as well start with a wrestling-related one. It seems those pro wrestlers have doppelgängers all over. I'd mentioned before that Wilson Bethel resembles Edge . I still stand by that statement. However, I think Jamie Campbell Bower looks even more like Edge. Jamie Bower, for those who are unaware like I was, is an actor who has quite an impressive resume already. I just watched The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (review to come later) and that's the first time I saw him...or so I thought. Jamie was in the final three Twilight movies, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Parts 1 and 2 , and t...

Choosing a side on DVD menu's -- what's the point?

Most DVDs go to a menu screen after you’re done hearing about ‘the cloud,’ how cigarettes can kill you and seeing a preview for the latest animated film. Some, however, give you an option. ‘Pick a side,’ they say. I’ve run into this twice recently – with the G.I. Joe DVD and The Break-Up DVD . At first I thought it was a cool concept. Maybe, if you pick Cobra’s side, there’s an alternate ending? Or maybe some special features --- like an in-depth look at Storm Shadow’s sword training. If you pick the side of the Joe’s, maybe there’s a look at their stunt training. No, no, and no. I went with Cobra and it takes you to the exact same screen, with the exact same features, as it does when you pick G.I. Joe. Same thing with The Break-Up .

Celebrity (look-a-like) sightings - part 2

Disclaimer: all of the following celebrity comparisons are based on personal opinion. You may agree with some and think I’m bat-shit crazy on others. There are ordinary people who look like other ordinary people. There are ordinary people who look like celebrities. Lastly, there are celebrities who look like other celebrities. Here's round 2 of celebrity look-a-likes: CM Punk and Adam Levine Adam Levine is the lead singer of Maroon 5. CM Punk is the longest reigning WWE Champion in recent history. Levine prefers that his hair stands straight up. Punk likes to gel his hair back. If not for the hair differences, these two could pretty much be each other. Even with the different hair styles, they could easily be brothers. I'm sure the ink-covered arms and other body parts don't hurt in making them look similar. I think Punk has more meat on him, but these two pretty much have the same build.
