5 Not-So-Mushy Movies for Valentine's Day

If you're looking forward to celebrating Valentine's Day, but not necessarily by watching a completely mushy movie, then here's a list for you. Here are five of my favorite romantic comedies that have a nice, romantic story, but also have the chops to be a good comedy. You won't need a box of Kleenex for these, but do have moments that leave you going, "Awww." 5. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) Who says super hero movies are limited to just fight scenes with villains? The romance in Captain America was a subtle one but ended up building to a very dramatic moment at the end of the movie. The sparks were there between Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell…the Kate Beckinsale look-a-like) and Captain America (Chris Evans) when the Cap was just Steve Rogers, the small guy from Brooklyn. When he became Captain America there was a lot more to be attracted to. There were a lot more girls who were attracted to him, but Captain America, being the faithfu...

Hollywood's Writer Overkill

According to Hollywood, a good majority of the world’s population are writers. I was reading through some of the descriptions on Redbox while trying to find a good movie. Ruby Sparks : “Calvin is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career … “ Leave : “Henry Harper is a successful novelist who has it all.” The Paperboy: "Miami Times reporter Ward Jansen returns to his sleepy hometown of Lately, Florida, where a decades-old façade of Southern gentility strains against the sweeping social changes of the 1960s." There are a lot of movies about writers that have been made, but it seems like there's a lot more of them the last few days. If it's not a movie about a secret agent, it's a movie about a writer. There's that old saying, advising people to 'write about what they know.' I get that. It makes sense. It's hard to write a novel or movie script about something you don't have any experience with. Is ...

Superhero Double Feature

DC vs. Marvel. The Green Lantern and C aptain America: The First Avenger . I haven’t seen a superhero movie that I haven’t liked so I figured The Green Lantern and Captain America were two good choices. ( Warning! Superhero geek mark-out mode here) Batman will always be the best, but I remember wanting a shield like Captain America when I was five-years-old. I started off with The Green Lantern . As big a fan of the comic book heroes as I am, the Green Lantern is one back-story I wasn’t familiar with. I knew he had the ring and it had some sort of power, but, beyond that, I didn’t have a clue what to expect. Unfortunately it fell a little short of what I would’ve liked. It was a little more corny than epic, a little more predictable than exciting and, with the heavy use of computer animation, a little more video game than movie. It felt a little bit like they were going through the motions with this one. Ryan Reynolds was a good choice for the part, but it seems he wa...
