It's Time for AEW to Introduce Women's Tag Team Titles

AEW has hinted at introducing women's tag team titles for years, but now is the time for Tony Khan to make the move. Currently, the combined AEW and ROH rosters equals about 40 different women.

Granted, a lot of the women on the roster page are pregnant, out on maternity leave Ruby Soho), aren't wrestlers (Mother Wayne, Karen Jarrett), haven't been seen in ages (Madison Rayne, Riho, Nyla Rose) or are injured (Harley Cameron). Still, it's impossible to feature all of them every week on TV.

Women's tag matches happen quite frequently already, but titles would give those matches at least a little more purpose. So, why now? Well, beyond the stacked roster, there are multiple free agents available to sign. For example:

  • Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter were just released by WWE
  • Gigi Dolin and Shotzi Blackheart were also released by WWE
  • Jakara Jackson was released (and has experience in a tag team)
  • Isla Dawn was released (and has experience in a tag team)
  • Sonya Deville was released by WWE not long ago
  • Blair Davenport was released by WWE not long ago

That's two legitimate tag teams right there and the possibility of several others. Plus, the IIconics are back in Impact Wrestling as the Inspiration, but they signed a short-term contract. The introduction of Women's Tag Team Titles could certainly help lure them over to AEW. They'd likely be the only female tag team to win titles in all three major companies.

Having another established team join the ranks would give the titles some instant credibility. AEW could actually outshine WWE in this division because they shouldn't end up with as many thrown together tag teams.

After all, it's not like an AEW women's tag division would just be made up of former WWE stars. AEW has a surprisingly good start with some already formed, capable tag teams:

  • Anna Jay and Tay Melo - they're history goes back several years, so they're a natural team
  • Megan Bayne and Penelope Ford - admittedly, this team was thrown together, but they're making the most of it with matching gear now
  • The Renegade Twins - as far as I know they are both still wrestling, but I don't think they've had a tag match together for quite some time
  • Deonna Purrazzo and Taya Valkyrie - it's a similar situation here, with their alliance kind of falling on the back burner
  • Julia Hart and Skye Blue - now that Blue has returned from injury, they're reunited again
  • Mercedes Martinez and Diamante - they were teaming for a while and could again ... if either of them are going to be used before their contracts expire
  • Kiera Hogan, Red Velvet, and Leyla Grey - these 3 were all part of Jade Cargill's group, so there's history there and none have made big waves since Jade left, so reforming at least a duo could be beneficial for them
  • Willow Nightingale and Kris Statlander - they have a Bayley/Sasha Banks thing going where they can team up and break up again and again without it being an issue
  • Billie Starkz and Athena - I'm not sure if Billie is still doing Athena's minion work of if she's gone out on her own yet, but Athena forcing Billie to tag with her to win the titles would make for an interesting dynamic

Plus, there are several other tag teams that could be easily created:

  • Serena Deeb could really adopt any young wrestler as her pupil since she's the Professor of Pro Wrestling (maybe one Billie Starkz?)
  • Nyla Rose coudld be paired with any other heel on the roster
  • Ruby Soho and Shotzi seem like a natural pairing
  • Thunder Rosa's gimmick could match up with a few others, too
  • If Sonya Deville is signed, she could easily be paired up with someone new, whether it's a Marina Shafir, Deonna Purrazzo, Serena Deeb, Nyla Rose, or someone else.
  • Jakara Jackson would fit in with Red Velvet
  • Thekla just faced Lady Frost recently and even though they were opponents, the gear and vibes they both had screamed possible future tag team to me.
  • And although I don't want to see this, belt collector Mercedes Mone could easily choose a random partner just to get her to more gold.

Now, let me tell you this: I hate having too many titles in a wrestling company, or in pro wrestling in general. I think it cheapens the entire product. In fact, that's a blog that's coming in a few days. But, introducing AEW Women's Tag Team Titles would meet a number of objectives:

    1) Use the current roster of women on TV more regularly
    2) Set up new possible rivalries for the singles titles with history built into the feuds
    3) Provide a reason for the multiple women's tag team matches that we see
    4) Help attract talent that could make AEW's programming more entertaining

Hopefully Tony realizes that nobody wants or needs a women's version of the ROH Pure Title. The TBS Championship could be retired and not many people would really care. However, adding in some women's tag titles would be a great way to elevate multiple people in the division at the same time.

Celebrity (look-a-like) sightings - part 3

Part 1 and Part 2 were good, but I think there's some definite look-a-likes this time around. I'll get right to the comparisons, but let me know what you think? Am I spot on or what? I saved the very best (and closest comparison) for last this time, so make sure to scroll to the bottom of the page. On the left: Edge On the right: Jamie Campbell Bower May as well start with a wrestling-related one. It seems those pro wrestlers have doppelgängers all over. I'd mentioned before that Wilson Bethel resembles Edge . I still stand by that statement. However, I think Jamie Campbell Bower looks even more like Edge. Jamie Bower, for those who are unaware like I was, is an actor who has quite an impressive resume already. I just watched The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (review to come later) and that's the first time I saw him...or so I thought. Jamie was in the final three Twilight movies, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Parts 1 and 2 , and t...

Choosing a side on DVD menu's -- what's the point?

Most DVDs go to a menu screen after you’re done hearing about ‘the cloud,’ how cigarettes can kill you and seeing a preview for the latest animated film. Some, however, give you an option. ‘Pick a side,’ they say. I’ve run into this twice recently – with the G.I. Joe DVD and The Break-Up DVD . At first I thought it was a cool concept. Maybe, if you pick Cobra’s side, there’s an alternate ending? Or maybe some special features --- like an in-depth look at Storm Shadow’s sword training. If you pick the side of the Joe’s, maybe there’s a look at their stunt training. No, no, and no. I went with Cobra and it takes you to the exact same screen, with the exact same features, as it does when you pick G.I. Joe. Same thing with The Break-Up .

R.I.P. to the Apple Grande

I got some sad news recently: Taco John's discontinued their deliciously underrated treat: the apple grande. For me, this is worse than the Twinkie ordeal earlier this year. I grew up eating these whenever my family went to Taco John's. You didn't even need to get a taco. A Pepsi, potato oles and an apple grande was a delicious meal by itself. The apple grande was not one of those treats that you'd often hear people talking about. There are probably quite a few people out there who never even got to experience the taste bud happiness that the apple grande provided. It was an amazing, crispy flour tortilla that was coated in cinnamon and sugar and topped with warm apple filling, cheddar cheese and crushed cinnamon candy. I was told by one of the Taco John's locations that they no longer served the apple grande and that it was a nationwide change. I don't know if that's the case or not. The item is still listed on the Taco John's website...
