Charlotte Cupcakes – Kimberley’s Bakeshoppe Gourmet Cupcakes

Though they aren’t native to Charlotte, Wal-Mart and Target both carry Kimberley’s Bakeshoppe Gourmet Cupcakes.

They look like something you’d find in the display case of a bakery, rather than in a four-pack on a shelf at a big box store.

Therefore, it qualifies as a candidate on my quest for Charlotte’s best-tasting cupcake.

Plus, it’s an excuse to have something sweet.

Other than their holiday specials, Kimberley’s has four different flavors to choose from:
-Triple chocolate, filled with rich chocolate fudge
-Vanilla bean, filled with sweet vanilla cream
-Lemon Ice, filled with tangy lemon curd
-Red Velvet, filled with real cream cheese

As a faithful fan of anything red velvet, I went with that option.

It was a tasty treat, but there were a couple of downfalls with this cupcake.

First, it was tough to get it out of the plastic case and wrapper without becoming a frosting-fingered mess. There was just too much frosting on the top.

Come to think of it, that was the same problem I had when eating it. There was just too much frosting. It wasn’t needed since it was already filled with cream cheese. The cupcake, the cream cheese, and the frosting made for a successful combination.

The frosting didn't taste like it was freshly made, but given that it came from a package, I can't complain too much. I guess these could be likened to a fast food version of a red velvet cupcake. It fills the need, but it's not going to surpass a real bakery.

If it weren’t for the excessive frosting, I can’t say I’d have any complaints. I can’t say it was amazing, but it was good. I’m still enticed to try the triple chocolate and the vanilla bean cupcakes, so that says something. It may just mean that I’m a cupcake addict, but it says something.

The positives: The cupcake didn't fall apart on me. Both the cupcake and the frosting had good taste to them.

The negatives: there was just too much frosting for the cupcake!

Cost: at four cupcakes for about 4 dollars, it's probably the cheapest deal you'll find in Charlotte.

Here are at least two locations you can find Kimberley's cupcakes:
Walmart Supercenter
9820 Callabridge Court
Charlotte, NC 28216

Target Superstore
9841 Northlake Centre Parkway
Charlotte, NC 28216

  1. Not only is there too much frosting, these might qualify as the worst cupcakes I've ever eaten. Yes, the frosting was sickeningly sweet but the cupcakes we had were to be "real strawberries" and the cake had little flavor while the 'strawberry filling' did not taste much like a strawberry. Yuk!

    1. Are you crazy!! Too much chocolate frosting is not something a true cupcake lover would say!! My whole office just had the Triple Chocolate and we loved it! Got it at Ralphs Grocery Store here in San Diego CA.

  2. I think these are some of the beat cupcakes I have tasted. I have had the Pumpkin Spice, Vanilla Bean, and Red Velvet. The cake is sooner soft and moist. I agree the froatinf on top is a lot since there is a filling on the inside.

Celebrity (look-a-like) sightings - part 3

Part 1 and Part 2 were good, but I think there's some definite look-a-likes this time around. I'll get right to the comparisons, but let me know what you think? Am I spot on or what? I saved the very best (and closest comparison) for last this time, so make sure to scroll to the bottom of the page. On the left: Edge On the right: Jamie Campbell Bower May as well start with a wrestling-related one. It seems those pro wrestlers have doppelgängers all over. I'd mentioned before that Wilson Bethel resembles Edge . I still stand by that statement. However, I think Jamie Campbell Bower looks even more like Edge. Jamie Bower, for those who are unaware like I was, is an actor who has quite an impressive resume already. I just watched The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (review to come later) and that's the first time I saw him...or so I thought. Jamie was in the final three Twilight movies, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Parts 1 and 2 , and t...

Choosing a side on DVD menu's -- what's the point?

Most DVDs go to a menu screen after you’re done hearing about ‘the cloud,’ how cigarettes can kill you and seeing a preview for the latest animated film. Some, however, give you an option. ‘Pick a side,’ they say. I’ve run into this twice recently – with the G.I. Joe DVD and The Break-Up DVD . At first I thought it was a cool concept. Maybe, if you pick Cobra’s side, there’s an alternate ending? Or maybe some special features --- like an in-depth look at Storm Shadow’s sword training. If you pick the side of the Joe’s, maybe there’s a look at their stunt training. No, no, and no. I went with Cobra and it takes you to the exact same screen, with the exact same features, as it does when you pick G.I. Joe. Same thing with The Break-Up .

R.I.P. to the Apple Grande

I got some sad news recently: Taco John's discontinued their deliciously underrated treat: the apple grande. For me, this is worse than the Twinkie ordeal earlier this year. I grew up eating these whenever my family went to Taco John's. You didn't even need to get a taco. A Pepsi, potato oles and an apple grande was a delicious meal by itself. The apple grande was not one of those treats that you'd often hear people talking about. There are probably quite a few people out there who never even got to experience the taste bud happiness that the apple grande provided. It was an amazing, crispy flour tortilla that was coated in cinnamon and sugar and topped with warm apple filling, cheddar cheese and crushed cinnamon candy. I was told by one of the Taco John's locations that they no longer served the apple grande and that it was a nationwide change. I don't know if that's the case or not. The item is still listed on the Taco John's website...
